Expressions in Windows 11
Enabling users to express more, better, and faster
Premise
Expression is a fundamental human need. We constantly express ourselves as we communicate. In real-world interactions, body language and facial expressions play this role; in the digital space, the same purpose is served by emojis, GIFs, kaomojis, stickers, memes and more.
Background
In Windows, this need is currently met through the “Emoji and more” (Win + .) panel , which allows users to insert emojis, GIFs, kaomojis, and symbols anywhere they type. This panel is around for many years now. Our aim was to enable users to express more, faster, & better.
Goal
Understand the current day user needs when it comes to expression and cater to it through “Emoji and more” panel and increase the expression insertion count through the panel.
My role
For this entire workstream, I was the sole designer responsible for identifying user needs, exploring possibilities within the framework of existing design and delivering the final experience. For that, I conducted secondary research and led a series of experiments to improve the user engagement and overall NPS (Net Promoter Score) for this panel.
